Christopher McDonald - Hall of Fame Coach and Golfer (4 Points)

If he's not one of your favorite villainous guys, I don't know what to tell you.  Christopher McDonald is fantastic:

Thelma & Louise - Darryl Dickinson

Despite his degenerate gambling, uncleanliness, and demeanor, Darryl was somehow able to convince Thelma to marry him despite his general nature being captured right there in his last name ("Dick").  As we all know, Thelma deserts him after becoming an accomplice to the murder of Harlan Puckett [1].  Darryl, despite his general incompetence, aided the FBI in hunting down Thelma but not before her and Louise met their maker.

I mean...look at this guy?

The entire ordeal acted as a wake up call to Darryl.  Thereafter, he got into Gambler's Anonymous, moved away from Oklahoma, and got back into athletics where he first gained notoriety as a youth coach.  His gambling addiction caused him to prematurely end his coaching career but with his life turned around he was able to re-engage in the sport he loved...basketball.

Celtic Pride - Coach Kimball [2]

Several years go by and Darryl is rising through the ranks of basketball coaching circles, eventually leading to his hiring as head coach of the Utah Jazz.  It should be noted that while attending G.A., Darryl had his last name legally changed to Kimball; the reason being is that nobody likes having a last name with the word "Dick" in it, especially if you're a coach.

Shortly after becoming head coach of the Jazz, Coach Kimball, alongside mercurial superstar Lewis Scott, is in the midst of a deep playoff run.  Kimball is able to will his team to a game 7 matchup against the hated Boston Celtics.  Shortly before the game Lewis Scott goes missing but Kimball is able to keep his team focused.  Kimball, always the master tactician, benches Scott when he appears just before game time.  The benching lets Scott know who's boss and the rest of the players know that this will take a team effort to win.  The shrewd move leads to the Jazz winning game 7 and the NBA Championship.

Definitely looks like an NBA coach of the 90's.

Having reached the apex of his position, Kimball opts to retire the following season.  And what do retired people do?   They play golf.

Happy Gilmore - Shooter McGavin

During his coaching years, Kimball was known for his fanatical attention to detail and desire to be the best.  These skills would serve him well as he dove into golfing with his true-to-form passion.  The country club circuit wasn't for him though as Kimball wanted bigger and better.  A few years later, Kimball qualified to play on the PGA Tour.  However, not wanting to draw too much attention to himself while he worked his way up the rankings, he chose to go by his nickname growing up, Shooter, and adopt his father's original last name: McGavin.

Shortly thereafter, Shooter became the most popular golfer on the tour alongside his many victories.  This newfound popularity drove Shooter to develop quite the ego.  As the sport bent to his will, it was only a matter of time before a young upstart, in this case the titular character, would seek to usurp Shooter's role as top dog.   Happy's unconventional [3] playing style, disregard for the rules and customs of the game, drove Shooter to madness.

You can pinpoint the moment he went crazy.

Upon losing the Tour Championship (and gold jacket), Shooter breaks with reality, leading him to steal the gold jacket and attempt a getaway.  Mr. Larson would not have it and Shooter would be hospitalized for several weeks afterward as a result.

In between his physical rehab appointments and with the realization that he would never play golf again (Larson really did a number on him), Shooter took up real estate investing as a way of investing those hard earned tournament winnings.

Hard to believe Shooter made it out alive.

Dirty Work - Travis Cole

Becoming a national pariah while simultaneously learning how to walk again takes quite a toll on a person's psyche.  It's no wonder that Shooter would have to leave his entire identity behind in order to tackle the real estate game.  Therefore, Travis Cole would become the real estate tycoon and Shooter McGavin would be left to rot in the dustbin of history.

But a bird can't change its feathers and Travis would continue to exhibit the same determination and dastardliness as Shooter.

Travis would go on to retain Dirty Work, helmed by local trouble-makers Mitch Weaver and Sam McKenna, in order to drive out the tenants of a potential real estate acquisition.  But Mitch and Sam wise up to Travis' plan, which was to destroy the apartment building in order to build a parking lot (how very 1980's of him), and turn their talents on him.

Eventually, Travis is arrested but is given a slap on the wrist, as many wealthy white men do.  With much of his wealth still intact, Travis continues to build his real estate empire until the next tragedy befalls him.

Stray Notes & Observations

[1] Harlan never got over being spurned by Dana Barrett when living in New York City.

[2] Coach Kimball's series long feud with nearby superfans will be partially covered in the Daniel Stern Thread.  Additionally, at some point we'll have to cover fictional sport coaches...a lot of ground to cover there.

[3] Who did more damage to their sport...Russ Tyler with his Knuckle-Puck or Happy Gilmore with his golf shot?
